FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How does it work?
Think
of us as an unlimited time share for boats. All
you have to do is call in advance and reserve your boat
for the day you want to use it.
How many times can I use the boat during the year?
There are no restrictions on the number of times you use
the boat during the year.
What type of boats does the club own?
Our fleet consists of 22 to 29 foot powerboats that include
twin-engine sportfishing power catamarans. Every
boat is fully equipped to meet your needs whether it is
a hard day fighting fish or a cruise on the bay.
How far can I take a boat out? To Catalina? Mexico?
As a member you can take a Club as far North as the Channel
Islands, 30 miles south of Ensenada, and 100 miles offshore. That
means you can run to Catalina, the Coronado's, or even
the Cortez Bank.
What about fishing in Mexico?
Not a problem. Select boats in our fleet have Mexican
import licenses. Just let us know when you call to
book a boat that you wish to fish in Mexican waters, and
ensure that everyone on board has a Mexican Fishing License. These
can be purchased from the Dana Landing Market right next
door to our location.
What about overnight trips?
Not a problem. We allow overnight trips with prior
arrangement. The number of nights and days of the
week may be restricted during high season.
Who can I bring with me on a boat?
Friends, family, and guests. You can bring anyone
onboard, up to the maximum capacity of the boat, as long
as a Club Member is onboard.
Are there any additional costs or hidden fees?
No. You pay only your initiation fee, monthly dues,
and the actual fuel you use. The Outer Banks Boat
Club pays for everything else - - boat insurance, slip
fees, maintenance, cleaning, repairs... we take care of
it all!
What if I am not an experienced boater?
Not a problem. We will train you on the use of the
boats, including the onboard electronics, and many of our
more experienced members are willing to take new members
out with them fishing until you become comfortable to go
on your own. Each member is also required to complete
a USCG Boating Safety class. In addition to your
initial training we have instruction captains that can be
hired to give you special hands on training. This is
also a great way to learn more about navigating in our local
waters as well as finding the secret fishing spots.
What about safety?
All boats are equipped with the USCG's required safety
equipment. All of our fleet's VHF radios are DSC
equipped and have been integrated with the GPS systems.
Each of our boats have been registered so that in the event
of an emergency the activation of the DSC button will send
out a distress signal with the boats current position.
Allowing emergency responders to know exactly where you are
at. Along with this technology all of our members are
required to file a float plan detailing where they will be
boating and when they will return. That way if one of
our boaters are late to return we will know where to look
and who we are looking for. The club also has
contracted with Sea Tow to provide towing assistance should
any of our boats become disabled.
What electronics are on each boat?
The OBBC has standardized on Raymarine suite of
Electronics. All boats come equipped with Raymarine's
C-80 8.5" color display, 2kW Radome radar, DSM 300, Raystar
125 GPS, transducer, Navionics Gold navigation chart chip,
digital VHF radio. All of our boats are rigged the
same, which means you only need to learn how to use one
system. As a training aid, all of our members receive
a set of DVD's that will teach you how to use the Raymarine
suite of electronics.
Can I join with a friend?
Yes. We have a membership option that allows a friend
to join with you; it is called our "Buddy Pass".
